Treating natural stone
At Nitesco we know 3 different levels of treating natural stone: high, medium and economisch. Do you want to know which kind of treatment suits your natural stone floor? Please contact us via the contact form.
Flat sanding natural stone
Sanding is a surface treatment in which approximately 0.1-0.2 mm is usually shaved off the top layer. This treatment is carried with sanding machines equipped with rotating diamond discs. Sanding natural stone serves as a pre-treatment or as the first step in sweetening or the polishing process. Stone is made flat, smooth and clean with this treatment. Nitesco helps with treating natural stone and renew terrazzo or natural stone floors by sanding off damaged, worn or very dirty top layers. Damage and traces of use are first removed by rough sanding. The surface is then repeatedly sanded with increasingly finer segments, making the top layer denser and finer in structure. Do you need help with your natural stone floor? Contact us and together we’ll discuss the possibilities.
Sweeten natural stone and remove scratches
The sweetening process of natural stone takes place in the last phase of the sanding process. Superficial traces of use are removed by sanding and sweetening. Deep scratches and damage, as well as height differences and black joints between tiles, will remain with this treatment. In the past people used to sweeten natural stone with raw and cooked linseed oil. Now this treatment is being done with a sanding machine. Depending on the type of stone and the gloss requirement, you can apply different density and gloss levels, such as dull gloss, satin gloss or semi high gloss.
Natural stone polishing, recover shine
When you are looking for a treatment where optimal density is needed, you choose polishing. Microscopic scratches will be removed from the surface after the sanding and sweetening process. This treatment is carried out with sanding machines equipped with the finest sanding segments. This results in smooth and dense surfaces that exhibit optimal color depth and high shine.
Mineralize natural stone
During mineralization chemicals are brought into contact with the stone surface by the use of polishing machines. This causes a chemical reaction in the upper layer of the stone. The result: a new layer on top of the surface. The newly formed stone layer is high-gloss, slightly harder and densified. Making it less vapor permeable than the original stone surface. The treatment is suitable for types of stone consisting of silicon components, such as granite.
Impregnation of natural stone
Impregnation means penetrating natural stone with another substance. This treatment can be used to protect stone surfaces against liquids and dirt but also for possible prevention of frost damage. Stones are sealed with penetrating impregnating agents. Different impregnating agents are based on silanes, modified silanes, siloxane and fluoropolymer. If desired, it is possible to work with an impregnating agent that has no visible effect or an impregnating agent that has an effect on the color and the degree of shine. We can give you advice on this treatment.
Remove stains on natural stone
Removing stubborn stains (for example from red wine, rust, oil and ink) is done with different kinds of chemicals. The type of chemicals depends on the stone and stain type. If a stain is old or has penetrated deeply into the stone, the treatment should be repeated more frequently before the stain is completely removed. By cleaning natural stone, we remove ingrained dirt, microorganisms, glue, cement veil or old soap / polymer layers that cannot be removed with regular cleaning products. Special intensive cleaners are used which penetrate into the deeper layers of the stone. This in combination with scrubbing and polishing machines, the stone will be ready for a specific treatment.
Glazing of natural stone
With the help of magnesium fluorosilicate, fosfor of oxalic acid and machines equipped with a steel wool, the top layer of calcareous surfaces such as marble, composite and terrazzo undergoes chemical reaction. The chemical process is based on the reaction of the calcium carbonate of the stone surface with magnesium fluorosilicate and phosphorus. This new created stone layer is highly glossy, slightly harder and less vapor permeable than the original stone surface.
The result of a natural stone treatment
What to expect when your stone surface is treated? Discoloration and spots are less visible, but there isn’t 100% guarantee that we can totally remove it. Wear, usage damage and superficial light damage are restored to an equal surface structure. Stone structure is strengthened and wear resistance is increased. The floor is optimally brought to gloss and color. But keep in mind that there is a chance that there will be a difference in gloss between the parts that can be walked on and the parts which are less walked on. The floor is made dirt and liquid resistant for optimal water and oil retention.
